About The Artist

Michael Ippolito, composer and the Attacca Quartet

Praised by the New York Times for his “polished orchestration” that “glitters, from big-shoulders brass to eerily floating strings,” Michael Ippolito’s music has been performed by leading musicians in venues around the world. Drawing on a rich musical background of classical and folk music, and taking inspiration from visual art, literature and other art forms, Ippolito has forged a distinctive musical voice in a body of work spanning orchestral, chamber and vocal music.

His orchestral music has been conducted by Edo de Waart, Marin Alsop, David Alan Miller and Jeffrey Milarsky in performances by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, the Cabrillo Festival Orchestra, the Albany Symphony Orchestra and the Juilliard Orchestra. The internationally-acclaimed Attacca Quartet collaborates with emerging composer Michael Ippolito on his debut album to be released by Grammy-winning Azica Records.

This project will mark the world premiere recordings of Michael Ippolito's chamber music. While the music to be recorded on this album has been performed widely at concerts and festivals across the United States, none of it has been professionally recorded or released previously.

The Attacca Quartet has established an international reputation for their live performances and recordings. They are deeply committed to contemporary music, as evidenced by the album Fellow Traveler, their widely-praised recent release on Azica Records, featuring John Adams' complete music for string quartet. The Attacca Quartet and Michael Ippolito first worked together at the 2012 Great Lakes Chamber Music Festival, where they premiered his String Quartet No. 3 “Songlines” and they have continued their close collaboration on this current project.

Azica Records recently won a 2015 Grammy in the Best Classical Solo Instrumental category, and have earned consistent praise for their recordings of classical and jazz artists.

This album (working title “Songlines”) is built around two large works: the dark and intense String Quartet No. 2 (2010) and the lyrical and compact String Quartet No. 3 "Songlines" (2012). These large pieces will be complemented with shorter works for strings: the bright and buoyant big sky, low horizon (2013), the propulsively energetic Trace (2009), the simple, folk-inspired this circle (2013) and the gently hypnotic Smoke Rings (2015).

The album is planned for release in early 2017.

BUDGET

We need to raise a minimum of $5681 to cover the remaining costs of editing and distributing the album. If we exceed that goal, we will be able to use any additional funds toward graphic design for the CD artwork, publicity for the album release and artist fees for the Attacca Quartet.
