About The Artist

Chamber Opera Initiative

Chamber Opera Initiative (COI) is a student opera company dedicated to providing students at Northwestern University with unique performance opportunities, innovative productions, and a safe environment in which to be adventurous and grow as artists.

COI was founded in 2015 by former co-Presidents Quinn Middleman and Michael Powell as a performance outlet, and specifically out of love for Handel’s opera Ariodante. The following year, COI produced a double bill of comic operas (Menotti’s Old Maid and the Thief and Bizet’s Doctor Miracle)....

Chamber Opera Initiative (COI) is a new performance group founded by and comprised of music students at the Northwestern University Bienen School of Music. Though we are a student group, there are no university funds available for groups of our kind, which means we need your help to get this season’s production on its feet!

We aim to provide students with not only performance opportunities, but also the chance to develop entrepreneurial skills crucial to achieving success in the professional world. In addition to being musically talented, freelance musicians must act as small-business owners and be proficient in fundraising, production, publicity, self-promotion, and other non-musical fields. We strive to provide our members and participants with the tools they need to succeed in the world of classical music outside of a university setting.

The interdisciplinary and collaborative nature of opera makes it exciting, but also ends up being quite expensive. Besides the costs of props, scenery, costumes, and renting a performance space, we also need to pay for performance rights, orchestral parts, rehearsal pianists, meetings with expert vocal coaches, and a number of other miscellaneous expenses.

After last year’s successful performance of Handel’s Ariodante, we look forward to presenting a double bill of The Old Maid and the Thief by Giancarlo Menotti and Doctor Miracle by Georges Bizet in March 2016. It will be performed in collaboration with a chamber orchestra and student conductors in Northwestern’s Lutkin Hall on March 5th and March 9th. Thank you for your support and we hope to see you there!
